Fully Committed

I don’t think I have ever just “lifted” a press release and put it on my blog (in fact I have shouted at someone for doing it before) but Pieter Bosch Botha has done such a fine job, and said such lovely things about me it deserves to be kept, word for word. Here it is. Please let me know if you would like to come to our special showing on Tues 13 March in Jozi.

FULLY COMMITTED – Press Release

Pieter Bosch Botha takes to the stage once more in what must be one of his greatest acting challenges yet. 1 actor, 36 Characters, and over 200 character transitions! This smash hit Off-Broadway comedy is swooping in to South Africa and has been spiced up with a whole lot of familiar homegrown flair. Directed by multi-award winning actress and director, Megan Choritz, who is also very well known for her comedic brilliance. Written by award-winning American playwright, Becky Mode.

This devastatingly funny one act follows a day in the life of Sam Cooper, an out-of-work actor who mans the red-hot reservation line at Cape Town’s number one restaurant. FULLY COMMITTED is a frenetic tour through a fictional, extremely fashionable De Waterkant eatery where a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing–coercion, threats, bribes, and histrionics– in their zeal to land a prime reservation, or the right table.  Amid the barrage, Sam’s got his own needs to contend with: his recently widowed dad wants him home for Christmas, and he’s up for a choice part in Anant Singh’s newest movie.  While juggling scheming socialites, name-dropping wannabes, fickle international celebrities and egomaniacal bosses, can he manage to look out for himself?  FULLY COMMITTED has 36 wildly divergent characters, all played by a single versatile performer.

Reviews of “Fully Committed” on Broadway:  “An immensely entertaining, scaldingly funny play about the bad behavior good food can inspire.” – The New York Times.
“. . . hilarious and touching, gallops along at a swift, almost frantic pace.” - Time Out New York.
” . . .a sparkling one-man tour de force . . . very funny and very believable . . .
” - The New York Post .  “What makes the play so delightful is that all of the frustrating characters in the play get their comeuppance, and we are cheering on the inside at the resolution . . .” - Centerstage, Chicago

FULLY COMMITTED will be part of the Festival of Fame from 12 – 17 March and will be performed in the Space.com Theatre at the Joburg Theatre complex. Daytime performance tickets can be purchased, and the schedule is available on www.festivaloffame.co.za.

A special evening performance has been slotted in for those who can only make it at night. Tuesday 13th March at 7pm – tickets cost R40. Tickets for this performance can be purchased at the door on the night.

Hope to see you there!

Behind the scenes

It’s been very quiet here in and on meganshead, partly because I have been screamingly, excitingly busy. One of the things I am busy with is the direction of a hilarious, warm, delightful and charming one-man show called Fully Committed, performed by my nbf . This is a very special journey for both of us as we discover how to work with each other, how to separate; Pieter is a respected director in his own right and here he has to just ‘be’ at least 36 characters, and I have to remember how to direct someone without doing it myself!

I love the title of this play. Fully Committed is one of the most basic concepts of improvising, my first love. Here it means something totally different. The play is set in the dingy basement of a top-class restaurant, where the reservation line operator, an out of work actor, has been told to say, “Sorry, we are fully committed” instead of “we’re full.” He answers the phone and talks to patrons, the chef, the maitre ‘d, his agent, the business manager, his dad, only to mention a few. And this is all done by one actor. It is crazy, mad, fun and absolutely delicious.

I will keep you posted.

Rose Red; a wicked treat

Going to the opening of Rose Red at The Kalk Bay Theatre with my delicious theatre friend who is visiting was the best fun. It was a shmooze fest before and after, and we loved, loved, loved it (and I did have more than one glass of red myself. Just saying.)

And I loved this strange and wonderful story with songs. Rose Red is a monologue, written and performed by Dianne Simpson, accompanied by live pianist and MD Dawid Boverhoff, and directed by Pieter Bosch Botha. It is the story of Snow White, told from the perspective of the evil step-mom, the queen.

Pieter has transformed the stage at KBT into a dark and gloomy little cottage, exposing the gorgeous stone wall at the back and filling the floor with dry leaves, teeny stools for the dwarves and other bits of furniture that looks dusty and untouched. This sets the scene for the ghost of the evil queen to come and speak to us, mirror and all. It’s a layered, modern and complicated tale.

Dianne Simpson is amazing. She comes on in wicked fairytale clothes and make-up and tight and crooked upper lip. She looks like wired-up wickedness. Then through story and song (weird, well known songs, turned on their heads to fit her style and mood, including Tori Amos, Lady Gaga and Annie Lennox) and simple, beautiful piano music we start to understand the complicated dynamics, the feminist yearnings and the misunderstood actions of this traditional villain.

I have always thought that Snow White was a bit of a wimp. I was quite comfortable going with this complicated woman’s version. Her crazy upbringing, her rags-to-riches, her insecurities and need to be seen and loved. I was caught up from beginning to end. It was so refreshing seeing performers I don’t know (everyone is from Jozi, but Pieter is going to be making Cape Town his new home) being directed by some fresh new director whose work I have never seen. New ideas, new theatrical solutions, new excitements. I love theatre. And this is a great example. I swayed to my feet for a rousing ovation at the end.

Check. It.
