TheatresportsTM is a trademarked form of improvisational theatre devised by Canadian director Keith Johnstone. Local writer, director and performer Megan Furniss established the first TheatreSportsTM troupe in Cape Town in 1993. It worked under the banner of Improvision until it was rebranded in 2010 as ImproGuise.

This group has been playing continuously in Cape Town over the last 18 years, with many new improvisers coming through our training programme and joining the team over the years. Many of the city’s top actors, dancers and singers have been part of the team.

It is Short- form Improvisation and is performance based. Through a series of exercises and games, this course will cover the basics of Improvisation and will include How to be spontaneous, saying Yes And, Narrative skills, Character work and status, gibberish, Improvised singing and Genres. TheatreSportsTM workshops encourage listening, concentration and teamwork, to harness the power of “thinking out the box” in order to solve problems and work together and the skills learnt can be used as a powerful tools in both performance and in everyday life!

This course is for anyone who is willing and wants to learn how. No previous experience is necessary; all you will need is comfy clothing, a bottle of water and a sense of humour. Your teachers have 45 years experience between them, so you will either be in very good or very old hands. You must attend both weekends (part 1 and 2) to benefit from the whole experience because the course is divided up into sections, but if for any reason you cannot, the price will stay the same. We will not allow anyone to attend if you cannot attend the first weekend.

Please let us know if you are bursting to be part of this amazing experiences by booking a place ASAP,as places are limited. Contact

CT to Canberra FUNdraiser 2

I wrote this letter today.

Dear friends, family and fans of TheatreSports SA and improvisation

As you may know, Tandi Buchan, Candice D’Arcy and I (Megan Furniss) are going to Canberra, Australia in the first week of July to attend and participate in Improvention, a massive international improv festival. It’s an amazing opportunity to mix with the best improvisers around the world, share our skills and talents, learn everything we can in a week, and come back with inspiring ways to take improv forward in Cape Town and South Africa. We are so excited.

To raise money to pay for our air tickets we have a big FUNdraiser planned for the 23rd of May, at Artscape’s Drama Theatre. Tickets are R120 each, and the evening promises to be a mad marathon of improv games performed by the cream of TheatreSportsSA team, mystery celebrity appearances and even a prize or two for the audience. We would love to see you there.

We have asked people to Save The Date, and a few of our supporters have expressed an interest in contributing even though they can’t be there on the night. And who are we to refuse? On the contrary, we are extremely grateful. So, if you are elsewhere in the country (or world) and would like to help send CT to Canberra, here are our bank account details.  Please reference your contribution as Canberra Fund, so we know your money is for sending us on our way.

What is it? you say

An amazing one and a half hour long improv performance with long and short games, music, a mystery celebrity guest player and guaranteed improv craziness

But! Where will it be?

Artscape’s huge Drama Theatre

And when? you ask

May 23 at 2015

How much? you enquire, with raised eyebrow

R120 a ticket

And how do we get one of those tickets?

You book at Computicket, from the 1st of May.

Who will do it?

The best, sexiest and most fabulous TheatreSports team of improvisers

Why?

Megan Furniss, Tandi Buchan and Candice D’Arcy, veteran TheatreSports players and improv experts, are flying across a very big piece of sea to Canberra, Australia, host of an international improvisation explosion in July. The three will be facilitating workshops, attending workshops, watching and playing in improv shows and meeting the cream of improvisers from around the globe. And when they get back they will be exploding with everything they saw, heard and did. But they need the help of those who love what they do. Flying across that sea is violently, terribly expensive! So this special, amazing, once-off FUNdraiser is being held to gather a pocketful of funds to make it all possible. And they guarantee that it will be an awesome evening of the best improv entertainment ever. And that’s why you need to save the date, and then come.

A breath of fresh improv

Chicago improv veteran Joe Bill has been with us these last ten days, running workshops, classes and playing with us. What an amazing treat, on every level, but for me in a very particular way. Because I started our group almost 20 years ago I am by far the oldest, and have seen people come and go. This means that even when I am not the boss, I am, and I very seldom get told what to do. Having Joe there to be in the instructor position has meant that I could just play, and be naughty and risky and properly spontaneous (not that I don’t strive for that always) and also, I can be part of the group in a completely different way.

Joe has also taught us two new forms of long form improv; BAT (one of his own wicked inventions), and Harold, a famous format played all over the improv world with the usual success and failure that comes with long form Harold.

Last night we played a short TheatreSports show and then did a baby (short) Harold to the delight of our audience who screamed for an encore when we were done. How cool is that?

I love playing TheatreSports in the school hols because we have full houses, and last night’s was exactly that. So; a great team, hilarious games and stories, delicious Joe Bill, a great full house and that special magic satisfaction that comes from making it up as you go along made for a great night.

Thanks Joe Bill.

An Improv explosion Week

I am ungirding my loins to be as open and receiving as I can for next week, which is an explosion of improv on every level. I am performing TheatreSports on Monday night (our usual Monday night at The Intimate Theatre), and I am emceeing TheatreSports at The Kalk Bay Theatre on Tuesday night, which is a special ‘bring a child to the theatre’ performance. But, that’s not all. I am also running two Intro to Improv workshops for Theatre Arts Admin Collective’s family festival on Wednesday and Thursday, and, most exciting is that I am attending a workshop by a visiting Chicago improviser and facilitator, Joe Bill.

So, yes let’s. Yes we can. And let’s play.

TheatreSports – still fabulous

Saturday’s Halloween 18th birthday bash was delicious. Some of our audience dressed up. The foyer was all creepy. But the best part was the show. It was hilarious, inspired, crazy, dark and really, really funny. It was a brilliant showcase of what improv can be, and how it is so satisfying for an audience. Old friends, old players, family, new friends, and first timers all came together for a fabulous evening of creativity and laughs, and everything was so fresh. Thank you TheatreSports. It’s the best fun I have, and I love being on stage like that.
